John taught Physiology at Bart’s and then Barts and the London from 1978 until retiring from full-time employment in September 2009, He was, from 2002-2009, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Studies and, latterly, also Head of MBBS Assessment at Bart’s and the London. In retirement, John has become a Medical Assessment Consultant, providing workshops and assessment advice and generating reviews and reports for a number of higher education institutions, regulatory bodies and Medical Royal Colleges. His main areas of expertise are: the principles of good assessment, item-writing and OSCE station design, practical application of standard setting, the application of classical test theory to examinations in the health professions. He has worked with medical, dental and veterinary schools, with General Medical and General Osteopathic Councils, the Royal College of Surgeons in England, The Royal College of Radiologists, the Royal College of Pathologists and with the Solicitors’ Regulatory Authority. His consultancy work has taken him to various UK universities and to Ireland, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. John is a liveryman of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, where he is Deputy Chair of the Examination Board.
